About Me

Hello, my name is Haley Arteaga and I am an exercise science major at IU Indianapolis. Having grown up in Indy and attending Roncalli Catholic School (which used the Natatorium for swimming practices), I was aware of IU Indianapolis long before I began attending the school. In my sophomore year of high school I began swimming and would have everyday practices at the Natatorium at IU Indianapolis but I ended up attending Purdue University for my first couple years before transferring to IU Indianapolis. While I originally was on a pre-med track I soon found my interest in exercise science and have only grown more interested the more i've learned after changing my major. I have been lucky enough to participate in various clinics and working with companies who allow me to gain that hands on experience. I have always had a love for exercise and improving physical health and after the pandemic I came to the realization that it is what I wanted to go into professionally, specifically in chiropractics. I have been lucky enough to find work in a chiropractic office which gives me that hands-on experience and an idea of what my career could look like and preparing me for the ins and outs of the work. Growing up the oldest in a Mexican-American household as a first generation comes with its pressures along with the financial aspect which I have learned to navigate the older I have gotten; but it is also why I am so headstrong and hardworking in all that I do. I am excited for my journey at IU Indianapolis and the opportunities that I could be a part of ,like the Motor Activity Clinic, along with the outreach opportunities I have been involved in with my church and work. While my journey to this career and major has not been an easy road I do feel like it will be a rewarding one and I am excited to be at IU Indianapolis for it.

More About Me

Youth Meeting
I have always been very involved in my church and was lucky enough to go on a Trip with my youth group to Tennessee back in 2019. I was able to practice leadership skills and help the community along with becoming more involved in leadership roles and helping plan activities. I have always been involved with mission trips and very active in my church which has taught me how to work with others and in difficult situations.

Church Camp
With this trip directly I was more in a leadership role and put in charge of a number of individuals. This trip especially, taught me about what it means to actively lead and be the person others look to.

Outdoor excursions
I had taken a trip with family and friends along the East Coast into Canada and that trip was like nothing I've done before. I was really able to be out in nature and enjoy the hikes and bike rides in the forests. After the start of the pandemic, I really learned how exercise and food can not only help the body but also the mind and this trip reminded me how good just taking a walk, sometimes, can be. This trip took me back to when I initially began working out and what peaked my interest into exercise science and what pushed me into the major change; the ability to improve the body and mind through physical activity and exercise.
Major Goals

Exercise Science
Exercise science is essentially the study of human health, wellness, and movement. It ties together traditional disciplines like chemistry, biology, nutrition, physics, etc. to aid in the understanding of the links between exercise, diet, performance, fitness, physical activity and health.

Why Exercise Science?
I have always been interested in the body and improving health through both diet and exercise and with the pandemic I decided I wanted to go into a career of chiropractic and a degree in exercise science will definitely help with applying to programs when the time comes. I've known from an early age that I wanted to work in healthcare. I believe majoring in exercise science will give me the foundation I need to go into the chiropractic profession. I also just enjoy learning about the body and how it all works together and ways to improve movement and function. I have always loved helping others and found the best fit for me within this major.
Career Goals
Once finishing my degree in exercise science I hope to attend a graduate school of chiropractic and then move onto obtaining my license and work as a licensed chiropractor. While the schooling will not be easy I believe I have a passion for the work and can do it as long as I remain passionate about it. I hope to finish the graduate program in the normal range of 3 years and then move onto working in a smaller practice and gaining some experience and building that foundation to then hopefully move on to owning my own practice at some point down the line. I have found a good percent of chiropractors go into owning their own business so that was another driving factor for this career, the potential to own my own business helping others and making sure they are receiving the best care I can offer. I also hope to go into sports chiropractics just because ,as a swimmer, I know the demand on the body and hope to be able to reduce recovery time, reduce risk of injury and help them perform at their highest level.

My Experiences
Throughout my time at IU Indianapolis, I have become versed in a variety of skills surrounding exercise science; I have become certified in CPR and First Aid through my First Aid and Emergency Care course. As I have mentioned, I have a goal of going into chiropractics and I have been lucky enough to have worked in a couple of chiropractic offices, both treating very different groups of people. I have been able to make connections with the doctors of chiropractic I work with and they have become mentors in my journey to becoming a chiropractor. I have been able to get hands-on experience in different therapies and tools used to help the body along with shadowing the doctors and seeing first-hand what they are doing.

KINE-P246

My Experiences: Reflecting
This semester I took a course, Performance and Teaching of Cardiovascular & Resistance Training, also called KINE-P246. Over the semester, I got to experience leading a class in different workouts that I helped create along with getting to be active and perform workouts made by my classmates. I have gotten experience with the different forms of training and all that entails along with having to step outside my comfort zone in guiding my classmates through both long and short exercise routines. This course has shown me how I can use equipment for a variety of exercises along with coming to learn how to create a program for certain goals and presenting them. At the beginning of the semester I wasn't the most comfortable with the idea of teaching a workout routine that I have to create but as the semester went on and I got to know my classmates I lost the anxiety of "presenting" and had more fun with it. I can honestly say this class went from something I was nervous about to a class I got a lot useful information from and always enjoyed.
